Why Most Linear Gas Fireplaces Force a Gap in Your Wall
Here is a detail that rarely comes up until the drywall is already going in: most linear gas fireplaces need somewhere to dump their heat, and that somewhere is usually your wall.
The fix the industry settled on is a gap. A slot is left open above the firebox so hot air can escape, then a crown or a bulkhead gets built to hide it. Sometimes there are intake and exhaust louvres on the face as well. None of it is a defect — it is just physics, handled the ordinary way. But it does mean the clean, uninterrupted wall you sketched out is not quite the wall you end up with.

Everything stays inside the firebox
The Vienna is a single-sided direct vent linear fireplace with no louvres, no gaps and no heat dump. The heat is managed within the unit itself, which means there is nothing to vent out the front or the top of the wall, and nothing to disguise afterwards.
Three things follow from that, and they matter more than they sound:
- No gap above the fireplace. No crown, no bulkhead, no compromise on the wall design.
- No louvres on the face. The front is glass and frame, and that is it.
- Combustibles are fine. You can frame with wood and finish with drywall. No concrete board, no metal studs.
That last one is the sleeper. Specialist framing materials are not expensive on their own, but they change the job — different trades, different scheduling, different inspections. Being able to build a fireplace wall the same way you build any other wall takes real friction out of a renovation.
Three sizes, and what they actually put out
The Vienna comes in 40", 50" and 60", all natural gas, all vented from the top through 5" and 8" pipe. The viewing height stays the same across the range at 15.30" — only the width changes.

All three are 32.56" tall and 18.18" deep, with a framing depth of 18.5". Worth noting that the jump from 40" to 60" adds 8,000 BTUs on high but nearly twenty inches of glass, so the decision is mostly about the wall, not the heat.
The maintenance detail nobody mentions in the showroom
Sealed glass fireplaces fog on the inside over time. On a lot of units that means booking a technician to break the seal, clean it and re-seal it. On the Vienna the glass is double, screen free, and designed to be cleaned inside without a technician.
Over a ten or fifteen year ownership window, that is a genuine line item most buyers never think to ask about.
Where it is not the answer
Being straight about this: the Vienna is a direct vent gas appliance. It needs a gas line, it needs to vent through the top, and it needs to be installed by someone who does this for a living. It is not a unit you unbox and plug in on a Saturday.
It is also a serious purchase — the range runs from $6,399 to $9,499 depending on size.
